Welcome to Costa Rica

Welcome to Costa Rica

Pedro Rodríguez

Costa Rica has a full color culture because many people from other countries come to stay here. We have immigrants from Nicaragua, China, Colombia, Panama and other countries. Many people say that we have poor immigration policies. I agree because there are many immigrants in the country, it is easy to come to Costa Rica and stay here illegally. There is not complete control in our frontiers. Many people can pay to the authorities and become immigrants in the country. If the government were more effective in controlling who comes in to the country, there would not be problems with immigrants. The problem is the people that stay illegally because many of them do not get jobs and do bad things, but there are other people that stay here illegally because they want to work and help their families, the government has to help these people. There are many policies for example, people from other countries have to respect the laws like national citizens. You have to bring your documents like your id or passport. All people have to respect the right process to get in or get out of our country.

English Students

English IV Class

Dear Students:

Today you gave an excellent presentation about some English speaking countries. The presentations were good with a lot of information and some pictures. All the students have a great speech. I learned a lot about Jamaica, SouthAfica. These countries have very interesting cultures, specially the food and traditions. The food from Jamaica was very good, but I am not shure about if this meal is from Jamaica. You brought some food from the different countries and it was delicious. Next time you can bring more food. It is excellent to share with other students. The decoration with some stuffed animals for the presentation about South Africa was excellent. I want one of these stuffed animals!

Baking Powder Biscuits

Baking Powder Biscuits

· Flour -- 2 cups

· Baking powder -- 1 tablespoon

· Salt -- 1 teaspoon

· Butter, cold, cut into small cubes -- 4 ounces, or 1/2 cup

· Milk -- 2/3 cup

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together into a large bowl. Add the butter and work into the flour quickly with your hands to form a coarse mealy texture.
  2. Stir in just enough milk to bring all the ingredients together in a shaggy mass. You may have to add more or less milk than called for.
  3. Remove the dough to a floured work surface and knead briefly just to smooth out the dough. Do not overknead or your biscuits will end up tough.
  4. Roll out to a thickness of about 3/4 inch. Cut into rounds with a floured glass or a biscuit cutter. Place the rounds on an ungreased baking sheet and brush with milk or melted butter.
  5. Breads | Baking Powder BiscuitsPlace in the oven and bake until browned on top, about 12-15 minutes. Serve immediately.

Home schooling

Home schooling

Pedro Rodríguez

Education is the most value heritage that parents can give to their children. In many places is legal the home schooling. Home schooling is the education of children at home, is also called home learning. In Costa Rica you have to go to an institution to receive education, this institution can be public or private. I agree that the government should authorize home schooling in Costa Rica. This kind of education can be an alternative to the parents. Many schools have problems of drugs, violence and other problems, parents do not want to send their children to schools. I think that if the government authorizes home schooling, they have to evaluate the education. Maybe they can apply some test or exams to evaluate the quality of the home learning. Is not easy to approve this kind of system, but is an interesting alternative.

Social education

Social education

Pedro Rodriguez

Society is a complete system. Students are part of this system. We have to contribute with our responsibilities. Becoming students are not only to study, we have to help the community and have a social and humanistic education. I think that students have to do community service. It should be helping people with social problems, or helping kids, protecting and restoring the environment or any other activities. Community services have to educate and create citizens with social responsibility. Maybe we need that the law forced students to this kind of service, but we can use alternatives like changing our education system. The education system has to improve, and become more social, have to generate conscious to the society and the environment. If this doesn’t `t work we should use the law, but law is the last option. Maybe if we present other options to the students they can respond positively.

We want to live long time

We want to live long time

Pedro Rodriguez

Most people want to live many years. Nobody want to be sick or have and injury. Humans are made to live many years. We can live seventy or eighty years old. We want to live long time but longevity has advantages and disadvantages. We want to enjoy our life. Some people want to travel, have new experiences, share with their family and friends. These are wonderful activities. People need more that seventy years to do all they want, but every year we look older and weak. People cannot do the same activities that they did when they were young. Illnesses are around of us. It would be fantastic if we can live 100 years but without illness and if we become younger every year. This should be amazing, but now it is just only a dream. Meantime we have to enjoy every minute of our life and become happy all the time.

Please, do not smoke!

Please, do not smoke!

Pedro Rodríguez

Smoking is one of the biggest problems of this society. Every year 800 million people die because of smoking. Every day 80 thousand young people become smokers. Smokers smoke in many places, also in public places. We inhale this smoke and become passive smokers.*

I agree that smoking in public places have to be banned. There are many people with health problems like asthma. These people have serious problems when they inhale this smoke and become passive smokers. Children can develop future illnesses like cancer.

Smoking causes a lot of illnesses that can kill people. Smoking can kill people so I think we have to ban it in public places.

Public places are public, everybody can visit these places; but we have to be considerate with others. Not all people smoke. If we want to smoke we can do it in private places. Some buildings have areas for smoking. If smokers do it there, they do not bother others..

Also if the government banned smoking in public places, some people could stop smoking. They are going to have few places to smoke. Smoking is really bad. Everybody can choose if they want to smoke or not, but if you smoke, you have to remember that not all people want to smoke.

Interview

My new friend

Pedro Rodríguez

Last Monday I met a very interesting girl. Her name is Tulsi Patel. She is a student from the United States. Her parents are from India, but she born in United States. She is twenty years old. She lives in North Carolina. She studies biology.

She is a nice girl. She loves go to parties and dance. But she does not smoke or drink alcoholic drinks. She likes to go out with her friends. Two weeks ago, she visited Castro’s Bar in Tibas. I tell her that in Costa Rica people like to go out and dance salsa o meringue.

This is her second year. She is in a summer program for five weeks in Costa Rica. She is learning Spanish in Costa Rica. She chose Costa Rica because here it is necessary to speak people Spanish. Only a few groups speak English.

She wants to obtain a PhD in Biologist. She loves to study the human body. Maybe in the future she will be a scientist, researcher, or doctor. People that study biologist in United States have many jobs opportunities, but in Costa Rica it is the opposite.

She taught me some words in Hindu, like “hello” and “bye”. I love the environment and she encourages me to study biology.

Mister Carlos Arias

Design director of HWP

Dear Míster Carlos:

Last Monday I went to your conference about how we can use the digital resource in publicity. It is very important because people are connected by internet. We use internet specially the social networking websites like Facebook or Twiter. We can use this websites to make publicity. I liked the videos that you present about how publicity will be in the future. The last video was amazing. I can believe all that happening in the web. Websites take our life and privacy. You have knowledge about this topic, but I think you present the information very boring. You have to be more dynamic. I did not like that you do not present information about how we can implement the digital in publicity. You presented only the impact and necessity of use the digital resources in publicity, but I want to know how I can do it. Thanks for your conference.

Thanks

Pedro Rodríguez

Obstacles

Overcome my obstacles

Pedro Rodríguez Chaves

I enjoy every minute of my life. My life is not perfect but I try to become better every day. I have problems; some are more difficult than others. We have to overcome these obstacles. Our disabilities are just only a step in life. Many people have serious disabilities. Some ones do not have limbs. Others cannot walk, talk, listen or watch, and there are other people with mental illness like autism and depression. Everybody can see they and watch them succeed. They enjoy their life. They accept their disabilities. They become strong to face their problems. Can I do the same?

Families have to help and support one another. If we have their help is easier to overcome these problems. We also need the help of our friends. We have to tolerate all people. We should never have to discriminate against anybody.

I enjoy my life. I have my Achilles heel, but I am happy with it. I want to help others with their problems and be a better person every day. I believe that helping others is necessary and important to have a happy life.

Media and values

Media and Values

Pedro Rodríguez Chaves

At this age, media is around us. Media can be television, radio, internet, newspapers, magazines and others. Every day, we are close to the media. The media has a serious influence in people values. The media decides which themes, news or information have to be seen by people. Many times there is news that people are not interested to see. Media has to educate about interesting and necessary themes. Media has a serious impact in family relationships. People watch a lot of television and do not have time to talk and do outdoor activities. Television is the new nanny of the children, Children believe what they see. They believe television is the real world. Children do exactly what they watch in television. Almost all cartoons have mild violence and vulgar words. Media is very important in life, but we have to be carefully. Not all is good for us. Media has to control what information presents and how they present this information.
